A speech recipe

The speech recipe from my book I'd rather swim with sharks than make a speech.

SPEECH TITLE……………………………….

GENERAL TOPIC……………………………. e.g. Save Whales. Stop bullying.

Alternate energy. Donkeys.

OPENING WORDS.

Make sure you grab the audience’s attention with a noise, movement, question, statement, quote or funny story.

e.g. “Have you ever been bullied? I have.”

GREET AUDIENCE - Formally or informally -‘Good morning’. Hi.’

If you have been invited to speak, thank the person, company or association who invited you. In Australia thank the tribal people on whose land you are standing.

TIMING, TOPIC AND FOCUS

Explain your Topic, focus and how long you will speak for

e.g. Today I will be speaking for fifteen minutes on donkeys and what wonderful pets they make for handicapped children.

POINT OF VIEW

Say what you are going to say in one sentence.

e.g. Bullies cannot be allowed to win.

WHY YOU ARE THE EXPERT

I was bullied and to survive I became a bully. I have worked in kindergartens, schools, and colleges. I have seen bullying.

BODY OF SPEECH - 3 Main Points

You can use Who, What, When, Where, Why and How Formula.

Or

Past, Present and Future Formula

Or

Make a point. Give a reason and example and repeat point formula.

CONCLUSION of 3 Main Points

Say what you have already said in one sentence only.

ACTION CALL – What you want the audience to do because they have listened to you.

END – What you think e.g. And that, ladies and gentlemen is why this topic is important to me.
